    The announced Halal Food Festival is no doubt a very important one and should have happened yesterday. However, my concern is that if precautions are not taken, this could avail an opportunity to unscrupulous companies to feed Muslims with pork and/or animals and birds not slaughtered according to Islamic shariah.

    I wonder, what criteria are the organisers going to use to screen truly halal products from falsely claimed halal products? I am aware that there several products which bear halal label but are actually not halal compliant. On the other hand I know of truly halal products verified by Uganda Halal Bureau as well as some imported products certified by respected halal certification bodies outside Uganda such as Kenya Bureau of Halal Certification, SANHA of South Africa and Joakim of Malaysia and hence bear dependable halal marks.

    Consequently there are several certified halal products as well as non halal compliant products arbitrarily labeled as halal. The organisers should clarify the measures in place to ensure that only truly halal compliant products will be displayed and offered for consumption to Muslims.
