Mariam Luyombo is an educational entrepreneur and currently serves as director of Taibah Schools Uganda.
Having worked as a secondary school teacher at Makerere College for two years (1987-1988) and at St. Joseph’s Secondary School Nsambya (1988-1990), Luyombo made no mistake in investing in schools because she knew what was lacking.Mariam Luyombo worked as a headmistress at Nabisunsa Muslim Girls School before joining private business. She owns private schools from which she has minted a lot of money. Mariam owns the famous Taibah High School in Kawempe Mbogo. She owns Silver Spoon Day Care Centre.
She also owns Taibah College, an international school in Bwebajja along Entebbe Road. She also owns Taibah Junior for the rich kids. Taibah International School is a private co-educational, non-denominational boarding school. It is located at Bwebajja which is about 14 km from Kampala and 16 km from Entebbe.
She has also invested in real estate business and has properties in Canada, where she is a citizenship. She currently lives in Ontario, Canada, where she runs her own business. Mariam is a fellow of the inaugural class of the Africa Leadership Initiative–East Africa as well as a member of and Moderator for the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
Luyombo created a ten hour course, taught 540 children, trained two teachers, and developed a manual so teachers can take over the curriculum themselves. Although her project is currently on hold, she hopes that in the future she can continue her work with Taibah Young Entrepreneurship Program (TYEP). Her goal is to have 1,800 students graduate from the program. If 10% of them (180) start their own businesses, with approximately 50 jobs in each business, Uganda could see 10,000 jobs created.
She has received a number of prestigious awards in education innovation and entrepreneurship. Luyombo is also the executive director of Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association (UWEAL), which renders business skills, training and counselling services to women entrepreneurs.
In 1995, Luyombo’s enterprising work won her the first National Enterprise Award for Young Women Entrepreneurs by New Vision and Rotary Club. She also received Namagunga Old Girls’ Association (NOGA) Award of Recognition of Achievement in 1998. And in 2001, she scooped a certificate of recognition for championing educational change in Uganda from Uganda Investment Authority. She is married with three children.
She has done consultancy work in both areas and has served on several boards. She is a graduate of Makerere University, Kampala and has a bachelor of arts degree and a masters in education.
